Birch Communicator Setup and Usage Instructions

Birch Communicator extends TotalCloud Phone System (TCPS) calling capabilities to PC and Macintosh computers, as well as Android Smart Phones and iPhone.

Birch Communicator is an intuitive graphical user interface or "soft phone" that gives employees the freedom to use their computers or smart phones to make voice calls from work, home or on-the-road. Quality of service is not guaranteed over an internet connection.

System Requirements

Desktop System Requirements

Windows System Requirements

  • Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 (Classical mode)
  • Pentium 3 or higher with a minimum of 800MHz; however, 1.5 GHz is recommended
  • Disk Space required is 100 MB
  • A minimum of 512MB RAM is required, however, 1 GB is recommended.
  • A sound card, speakers, and a microphone or a headset are required.
  • Open Graphics Library (OpenGL) – Calling may not be available in some older desktop models with incompatible OpenGL graphics drivers.
  • Windows Administrative access to install new software.

 

Mac OS X System Requirements

  • Mac OS 10.5 Leopard, Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard, Mac OS 10.7 Lion, Mac OS 10.8. Mountain Lion
  • Pentium 3 or higher with a minimum of 800MHz; however, 1.5GHz is recommended.
  • Disk Space required is 100 MB.
  • A minimum of 512MB RAM is required, however, 1 GB is recommended.
  • A sound card, speakers, and a microphone or a headset is required.

  • iPhone 4 using iOS4.3

Andriod System Requirements

Android 2.3, 3.2, and Android 4 device currently on the market today and the following BirchBeyondMobile devices:
  • Samsung Galaxy S2
  • Samsung Galaxy S3
  • Samsung Galaxy S4
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Motorola Droid 2 (Milestone)
  • Sony Xperia PLAY
  • HTC Thunderbolt
  • HTC Vivid
  • HTC Sensation

 

How to add Birch Communicator to a seat or line that has the Executive Feature Set

Step 1

Log into BirchConnect.com. Then, point your mouse over "Manage Services" and click on "TotalCloud Phone System".

Step 2

Click on Number Settings from the left menu and select Communicator.

Step 3

Select the number from the Select a Number dropdown that you want to add Birch Communicator to.

In order to setup communicator on a number the number must have the Executive Feature Set.

Note: If you do not have the Voice Features admin role then you may only have a single option that is auto-selected

Step 4

Click the toggle switch under Communicator for Mobile and/or Communicator for Computer to turn Birch Communicator on/off for that number and select the Save button to save your changes.

Note: You will need your seat username and password to successfully login to the Birch Communicator app.  If you do not know your seat password select the Reset Password link at the bottom of the page and follow steps 2-3 below to reset your password.

How to Reset the Passwords for your Seat (Number)

The seat username and password are needed to log into the Communicator app.

Step 1

Log into BirchConnect.  Select Manage Services > Total Cloud Phone System from the main navigation and select User Profile in the Number Settings section of the left hand menu.

 

Step 2

Select the number you want to reset the password for from the Your Number dropdown.

Step 3

Scroll to the Seat Username and Password section and enter in your new password in the Reset Password and Confirm Password fields.  Click the Save button to save your changes.

How to Download and Install the Birch Communicator App

Download Communicator for PC (Windows)

Step 1

Click the link below to start downloading the Birch Communicator App.  You can also find the link to download Birch Communicator in the Downloads widget found on the Get Support page of BirchConnect.com or the Downloads page found in the Enterprise Settings section of the TotalCloud Phone System page in BirchConnect.com.

Step 2

After downloading Birch Communicator, click on Next to install it.

Click on I Agree to accept the Software License Agreement.

Select your install options and click Next.

Choose your install location and click Next.

Step 5

Click on Install to begin installing Birch Comunicator.

Step 6

Click on Finish to launch Birch Communicator and enter your seat username and password to log into the Birch Communicator app.  If you do not know your seat username and password read the How to Reset the Password for your Seat (Number) section.

Step 1

Step 2

After downloading Birch Communicator, drag the icon to the Applications folder to Install it.

Step 1

Click the link below to download the Birch Communicator App from the Apple App Store.

Step 2

Launch the Birch Communicator app and enter the Seat User Name and Password. Tapping either the username or password fields opens the virtual keyboard. When both fields are filled, the Sign-in button is available. If you do not know your seat username and password read the How to Reset the Password for your Seat (Number) section.

The following is a list of the Login window fields:

  • Password –This is a text field with password masking.
  • Show password –This is toggled “OFF” by default. If checked, the typed password appears unmasked. This is reset to “OFF” each time a new login is attempted.
  • Remember password –When toggled ON, this allows the password entered to be saved for any future login attempts. Sign in automatically –This can only be toggled “ON” if user name and password are provided. It is set to “OFF” by default. This can only be enabled if Remember Password is “ON”.
  • Sign in button – Once a valid Seat Username and Password are entered, click Sign in to use the Birch Communicator (this requires a data connection).

If Remember password is not toggled “ON”, the Seat Password must be entered each time the app is launched. If Remember password is set to “ON”, then this screen is shown with all credentials automatically filled.
